Newest Tech Craze Can Help Seniors with Dementia and Alzheimer’s

May 9, 2017 by Luke Ries

The Amazon Echo is the newest technology craze on the market. It is a voice-activated device that can answer any question, and assist anyone with simple tasks around the house, from turning on lights to ordering pizza. Lately, the Amazon Echo has shown to have benefits with helping seniors with dementia or early stages of Alzheimer’s.

While the Echo, also known as Alexa, may just seem like a toy, it has many benefits that can help improve the life quality of seniors living with Alzheimer’s or Dementia, as well as seniors with limited mobility, or other health conditions. There are many functions to an Echo, and most of them are helpful to seniors.

  • Answers Questions: The Echo is voice-activated and all your loved ones have to do to prompt it to listen is say, “Alexa.” This is beneficial to seniors with Dementia or Alzheimer’s because many of them may be forgetful and can’t remember certain facts, and Alexa can instantly give them the correct answer.
  • Entertainment: Alexa can also provide your loved ones with a variety of entertainment options. She can tell jokes and riddles, as well as play any song your loved ones want to hear. She can also forecast the weather, keep them updated on the news, and read full books.
  • Takes Notes: Another great benefit of Alexa is that she can take notes and remember anything your loved ones tell her. So if your loved ones typically forget things throughout the day, they can tell Alexa, and she can read the notes back to them later.
  • Smart Home: Alexa also has a feature where she can control the thermostat and lights in the house, if you have Smart Home technology set up. This is great for seniors who have limited mobility but need to adjust the temperature or turn on lighting within the house, without having to get up.

Having an Amazon Echo can help your loved ones have more control over their environment and their independence.
